December 1st 2010: The Worcester Telegram had several articles discussing the safety of Worcester following the murder this past week at Crompton. The citizens want more police on the streets and want to know what to do to keep this from happening again. Here's a thought, STOP taking away the fields for our league and other leagues to use. In the fall there are games on Sundays, Monday nights, sometimes Tuesday nights and Friday nights (kids flag). The more people hanging out at a field for a sporting event, the less likely a murder will be committed. Some may argue that a couple teams in our league actually increase the odds of that happening but I would like to think not. If the parks department gives us the permits we ask for, I think everyone wins. Our league will have fields to play on, the residents will feel safer and the bag lady's will have a steady source of income from the empty Molinari's beer cans. Win, win, win!!! October 18th 2010: This weeks games has inspired me to put out an opinion poll about who the worst teams are when it comes to holding on the offensive line. October 17th 2010: One question: Which team has scored more points on the number 1 defense (JDS) in the league? Molinari's, Cosmopolitan, Millbury, Cutler or Emerald Isle. Answer: Emerald Isle yesterday afternoon with 16. Emerald Isle actually dominated most of the game. Up 7-0 Emerald drove the field and scored another touchdown according to the both referees on the line of scrimmage but the umpire overruled them and they had to settle for a field goal to go up 10-0. Their next drive they drove the field again and kicked another field goal to go up 13-0. Right before halftime, Emerald drove into JDS territory and attempted a field goal that was wide left. With 12 minutes in the game up 13-0, Emerald drove to JDS' 1 yard line and had a 1st and goal. They ultimately threw an interception which is part of the reason JDS was able to get back into the game. JDS would get a go ahead TD with 1:05 to play but Emerald knew they just needed to get into field goal range to have a chance at probably the biggest upset in at least the last 15 years. Emerald took the kickoff to midfield. They managed to get to the 29 yard line with :03 seconds left and attempt a 46 yard yard field goal that just cleared the goal post for the victory. Great win for Emerald. I hope you don't have any more big upsets for at least 2 weeks though. September 27th 2010: I thought the officials did a decent job this past Monday night. The only 'suggestion' I would make would be on the last play of a half, if you know the ball will be thrown into the endzone, shouldn't one official be sitting on the back line to verify feet are in bounds? JDS had a 4th and goal from the 25 yard line. The ball was thrown to Bama on a fly pattern and he caught it in the back of the end zone. It was a hell of a catch and he deserved the TD even if he was on or outside the line. I'm not saying he was out of bounds. I couldn't see it from my angle. It would just make me feel better if an official was on that back line for the play. November 12th 2009: Last Sunday the league was short a few referees so I was asked to referee the Legends League games at O'Connell field so another ref could be used at Voke. I agreed and now that it's over I will naturally share some thoughts on the day. First, the Legends league is a much more civil league than our league. For example, in the first half of a game one team was winning 32-0. They easily could have ended the game with a mercy if they wanted to but instead they purposely dropped interceptions and even took a knee to end the 1st half. That would never happen in the flag league. In a different game between the 2nd and 3rd place teams, one of them had a 7 point lead. As the other team was going in for the tying score the nose guard reached over and purposely tapped the centers hand. I threw a flag for an intentional offsides. A 20 yard penalty. The nose guard said he was just messing around. My reaction was "well it's going to cost you 20 yards". Then the center said, "we were just fooling around, I don't want a cheap penalty like that". So I waved it off. I'm not sure if that would have happened in our league either. The center who said he didn't want the penalty played for Breens Cafe. The reason I bring this up is because the Breens sideline went nuts when I waved off the penalty. I explained to the Breens players on the sideline that their center said the two were messing with each other and he didn't want the penalty. The players on the sideline after hearing my explanation seemed fine with it but weren't thrilled that their center declined the penalty. However, even though the players were fine with it, some of the Breens fans on the sideline (aka female significant others) were relentless in badgering me about waving off the penalty. I believe I called a holding penalty on Breens a short time later and heard "wave it off, they were just messing around" but it wasn't said in a playful manner. It was said with a really negative spiteful tone. Later in the game, Breens drove down the field and scored a touchdown. They went for 2. A pass was thrown towards my sideline in the back of the end zone. On the other sideline, there was a ref standing on the back line. The pass was completed and I raised my hands to signal a good conversion. At the sametime I noticed the other ref waving his arms indicating the receivers foot was out of bounds. We discussed it and even though I was closer to the play, the other ref told me he was on the back line and saw the first foot come down on the line. That being the case, we signalled no good for the try. Again, the Breens players were not happy. I explained why I changed my call and even though they didn't like it they seemed to understand why me being the closer ref would allow myself to be overturned. The female fans however were not as understanding. The insults were flying at me the rest of the game after that. I believe the funniest one was "maybe the field should be in braille". Unfortunately, once again, the comment was not said with humor. All the comments were said with as much malicious intent as one could say it. So on one hand I saw a level of sportsmanship by the players in that league that was way over what you'd see in our league but on the other hand, they had the most uptight and rude fans I've seen in a while. I guess it's good I have a thick skin and didn't let any of the comments bother me too much...... oh ......and it doesn't hurt that I have this website to use as my soapbox to bash them either. November 2nd 2009: I am going to point out something to which I'm not sure I can explain the reason "why" it happens. All I know is it just happens. When there is less than a minute in the half or in the game, there really isn't a better team at scoring than Molinari's. I'm not just talking about this year either. It's also not a phenomenon with one quarterback or receiver either. Here are some examples of what I'm talking about. In 2004, we're beating Molinari's 16-13 with 40 seconds left in the game. They have the ball 3rd and goal from the 34 yard line. Dan Coonan completes a 34 yard pass over the middle for the winning TD. In 2006, Molinari's is playing a team from Rhode Island. They're losing 13-7 with about 20 seconds left. They're on the 40 yard line. John Armento is the QB this time and he completes a 40 yard pass for the game winning score. This year Mario is the QB and against the Wreckin Crew with about 30 seconds left he completes a 35 yard pass for the go ahead score. These are only three examples but if you watch any of their games you will see this happens on a regular basis and they do it against really good teams not just the crappy ones. When I talk to the captains of other teams, they all agree, you can not give them the ball with any time left on the clock at the end of a half. No matter what defense you play, you will give up points. October 15th 2009: The answer to this question can be found in the 'League Rules' link under Topic 3, Section 2, Article 1. Last paragraph. | October 31st 2006: Coming into week 8 Cutler needed to win its last 3 games and East Side needed to lose its last 3 games in order for Cutler to make the playoffs. It sounds unrealistic but if you look at the schedules they each had left it was very possible. Cutler had Emerald Isle and Distefano's while East Side had Millbury and Molinari's. The last game of the season is Cutler verse East Side. Cutler managed to beat Emerald and but were eliminated when East Side upset Millbury. I mention this because Cutler may partly have themselves to blame for Millbury losing. The week before Cutler didn't have enough guys to play Millbury and had to forfeit. Knowing Mario wouldn't be available the following week we were going to play our backup for most of the game to get him some reps and to try and find a rhythm with the rest of the offense. Instead a guy who had only thrown 3 passes all year had to play his 1st game in 30 mph gusts against a very good East Side team. Playing QB in this league is tough enough when you play every week never mind when you only play once or twice a year. Every team in this league or any other league for that matter is going to struggle when their starting QB doesn't play against a strong opponent. Now there's no guarantee our backup QB would have played any better had he had a tune up game against Cutler but it couldn't have hurt. It was mentioned to me that the league shouldn't be making players who don't make at least 5 games ineligible for playoffs. The argument is that this is a men's league and most of the guys have families and other responsibilities so they can't always make all the games. Those are good points. After thinking about it though, I disagree that every roster player should be eligible for playoffs no matter how many games they've played in. Here's why. There will come a day when Mario will no longer want to play because like everyone else he is getting older, his kids are getting older and he has more responsibilities. If he didn't have to play 5 games, instead of calling it a career he could just ask to be put on the roster and skip 8 or 9 games during the regular season and show up and play in the playoffs. Assuming we made it. How fair would that be to the other playoff teams that hadn't even seen him play all year and now they have to figure out how to defend him. Now most teams have seen Mario play so they might not be too surprised to see what he can do but what if another team picked up someone of the same caliber as Mario and he didn't show up to play until the playoffs? The rule has nothing to do with trying to make the league harder for guys to play in. It has to do with fairness. October 23rd 2006: First, I'd like to commend the 7 guys from Cutler that showed up to play this week. Losing every week is tough. But it's mentally draining to have guys that you count on to be there not show up for games. If you commit to a team you should see it thru and not jump ship when the water gets rough. The guys that show up every Sunday for Cutler deserve a lot of credit for hanging in there. Let talk about Molinari's now. Unbelievably I'm going to say some good things about them. I bust their balls all the time on this site and nothing I say ever really bugs them. They just laugh about it the next time I see them. Of course, most of the time, they just might be too drunk and/or stupid to understand what they're reading. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they just have a sense of humor. And not to ruin their reputation but Derek Stankus and Jeremy West actually helped take down the goal posts Sunday as well. So thanks to them as well as Miguel Galindo (Undertakers) for helping. I haven't really ripped on anyone yet and even though the Undertakers would be an easy target after what happened between their players on Sunday, I'm going to zero in elsewhere. The New England Flag Football League. We had someone go watch their games this past weekend. Their number 1 and 2 teams played each other. Outkast and the Ciccone Outlaws. Their 3 and 4 teams also played against each other. As well as 5 and 6. Here is what I was told. The Monsoon and Molinari's would have no trouble with either of their top two teams. Our 3, 4, and 5 teams in the standings are probably the same caliber as their 1 & 2 teams. Now that opinion may be a little biased towards our league so take it for what it's worth, but as of right now that league hasn't gotten back to us about a game between the two league champs. Maybe that's because they sent someone up to watch some of our games and thought better of it. October 16th 2006: From what I was told, Cutler only had 9 guys when they played the Undertakers this past week. To make matters worse, one of Cutler's players got hurt and just stood on the field at linebacker so the game could continue. The Undertakers had a 31 - 14 lead with a minute and a half to go and the guys from Cutler said they had had enough. The Undertakers however told them they wanted to keep playing. They wanted to score one more time. I hope that isn't right. With a minute and a half to go in the game you shouldn't be trying to pile on the points against a weaker undermanned team. Even Molinari's wouldn't stoop that low.....well.....okay that's a bad example. Anyway, if the Undertakers are reading this, and I know you are, you guys are on the way up. Know when to take a knee. October 8th 2006: I was a referee at the three Legends league games this weekend. For the most part, two of the games went off without a hitch. The third game was a nightmare. Right from the beginning both teams were crying over the little things. The defensive linemen wanted holding (there's a 3 count for defensive linemen. Offensive linemen didn't need to hold and for the most part didn't). One wide receiver said the defensive player was getting in his way while he was running a pattern. (are you kidding?) I also heard some guys screaming for intentional grounding when a ball was thrown at the feet of an offensive lineman to avoid a sack (the offensive linemen can legally catch passes in the league). There were also some complaints about the clock. Before one play a team asked how much time was left. They were told 3 minutes. (In the Legends league the clock runs without stopping until the two minute warning). The team then ran a play which was a 40 yard pass down the sideline. It was incomplete. The ball was retrieved by the team and brought back and given to me to be placed back at the line of scrimmage. The team then got in the huddle and when they broke the huddle the two minute warning was given. They thought they were screwed out of time. First, they didn't snap the ball until 15 seconds after we told them there was 3 minutes left. The play took about 10 seconds. It took them about 20 seconds to chase the ball down and get it back to the line of scrimmage and then they spent 15 seconds in the huddle. There's your minute. Do the math Einsteins! And to make themselves look really bad the league president was the clock keeper for the game and they started complaining to him about not doing a good job with the clock. Instead of playing football these guys cried to try and get ticky-tack fouls called and then argued the obvious. (QB ran 5 yards past the line of scrimmage and threw a pass and then didn't understand why I threw the flag). I can see why a new referee who wasn't familiar with the league would not want to come back. If you have a brand new referee on the field give him a chance. If he's trying to call a fair game then shut up and be thankful you don't have someone who won't confer with the other refs and/or wants to be the center of attention. And if you have a problem with a specific referee then show up at a league meeting with an example backing up your claim. Complaining on the field does NOTHING! September 24th 2006: East Side Warriors shot themselves in the foot this week. Down 8-0 they intercept a pass and the defensive back has no one in front of him and is going to score EASILY! What happens? Someone on the defense makes a block in the back on a player who has no chance to catch the guy running for the score. When a guy is running wide open to the end zone it's time to become a spectator. Second mistake by East Side, it's 8-3 and there is less than a minute to go in the half. They have the ball on their own 20. I hear John Madden saying you should run out the clock and I agree. But instead an out pass is thrown and guess what happens? You guessed it. Interception returned for a touchdown. Lucky for East Side the refs say the defender was caught at the one yard line and GA Siding didn't have enough time to run more than one play, which was an incomplete pass. Next time run out the clock PLEASE! Time to defend the Warriors now. In last Tuesday's game against Molinari's, East Side punted the ball down 13-9 in the pouring rain. Molinari's only had 8 guys on the field. Advantage East Side right? Wrong! Because once the ball was kicked and the East Side punt team ran down the field, a player for Molinari's jumped in behind them and started trailing the play. To make things worse for East Side, the punt returner makes a break for the sideline and has one man to beat and guess who's there to make the block? The 9th player that jumped on the field after the play started. 70 yard touchdown for Molinari's and that's lights out for East Side. For the record, I'm not disclosing anything that isn't already public knowledge. The incident was discussed at the league meeting last Thursday night. September 12th 2006: There are lots of people complaining about the league, the refs, the fields, etc. but no one seems to want to do anything about it but complain. The Chandler Magnet field doesn't have official goal posts on the field because we couldn't get enough people to volunteer to help do the job last Saturday. Only 3 people stepped up to the plate to line the field and arrange temporary goal posts so we could have games there on Sunday. Because no one volunteered we still have an unfinished field. The school is not going to let us keep the temporary posts at that field because they need to use them as soccer goals. We need people to help put up goal posts at the field in time for this Sunday's games. The more time spent on fields, the less time we have for other issues. NOVEMBER 28th 2005: At halftime of our game this past Sunday I saw Meola's QB talking at length with the referees. As the captain of the team I decided I should go out and listen to what's being said to the refs by one of Meola's captains. I got there and was listening to the conversation and had not uttered a single word when Meola's QB said something to the refs that was directed at me to the effect of "this jackass is calling all your penalty's for you". I'm not sure of the exact wording but it was a negative comment directed at me nonetheless which I naturally didn't care for. My only response to him was that as a head coach in H.S. he tries to influence referees every single week. I'd be more than happy to post a survey asking who works the refs the most in this league. My "working" the refs really paid off too, we were forced to attempt a field goal with 1:19 to go in a 7 point game on THIRD DOWN because the down marker on Meola's sideline said 4th down and the head referee refused to listen or accept that it might be wrong. After the game while shaking hands I debated whether to shake hands with Meola's QB and as I came to him I flinched my hand but decided to leave it out there. Upon seeing me flinch he pulled his hand away and started yelling at me as he walked through the rest of the line. Then he came over to me afterwards and called me an a**hole and shoved me. He then got face to face and started ripping me and calling me an a**hole some more for not shaking his hand. My guys told me to walk away and I did without saying anything. As I'm walking away he starts yelling, "that's right, walk away". To be honest, if I HAD pulled my hand away I think it would have been justified for the jackass comment made to me for no reason. Also, how many guys in this league would have allowed someone else to shove them and call them an a**hole? Probably not many. It could have turned into a full blown brawl and set this league back another 10 years. So I'll let the readers of this decide if there is an a**hole in this story or not. In maybe 15 games against Meola's over the years, I have never physically been involved in a play with their QB since I do not rush the QB and he usually does not run. (I'm sure some of my guys would even claim I have never been physically involved in any defensive plays) I have also never verbally insulted him in any way during a game or on this website. So why at halftime did he call me a jackass?
NOVEMBER 11th 2005: With only one week left in the regular season, every team with games left to play has something to play for. When it was decided in August to have one playoff instead of two I believe we wanted everyone to have a reason to play the regular season. Originally Meola's, Molinari's and Millbury were going to play in their own playoff. Millbury wasn't even worthy of the 3 seed this year and Molinari's barely got the tie breaker for the 2 seed. Also, the bottom four teams are all still fighting to make the playoffs. The regular season actually meant something this year which is the way it should be. It should be a good week for football. I also strongly encourage teams to send a rep to the next meeting. NOVEMBER 8th 2005: I talked to Fran last week about adding a "new" referee to the games for the last couple weeks of the season. He said that if I could get someone new to come do the game with the other officials that we could give it a try. We agreed that it would be best to have him do the Legends league games first. There are a couple other referees that I think would do a good job and might be interested in doing some games. I will talk with Fran this week about possibly asking them to work some games this week if they can do it. The goal is not to replace the referees we currently have but instead to start growing the pool of referees we can choose from so that in the end we do not leave the league vulnerable to the possibility of not having any referees at all. If there are any new referees at the games in the next few weeks it is very important to make sure you treat them with respect even if you think a bad call has been made. Their only agenda at this point is to try and call a good game so that they get asked back for more games. They are first year referees and will be doing their best to try and prove themselves. So keep that in mind when a judgment call is made in favor of the opponent. OCTOBER 30th 2005: If there is one thing that it seems every team in the league can agree on, it's the performance of the referees. I'm thinking that at the end of the regular season each team rep should vote on who the top four officials are in the league. I know that's not an easy task. Shouldn't the playoffs be worked by the best available officials? The high school Superbowls are worked by the best refs. Same with the NFL playoffs and college bowl games. I realize this is just a flag league but shouldn't the refs in our league work towards a goal other than just collecting a paycheck? Maybe this might get the competitive juices flowing amongst the refs and have them work harder to be one of the four. And even if only 1 ref actually cares enough to try and prove himself to be in the top four, isn't that still better than what we have now? OCTOBER 18th 2005: I was talking to a few players from Club Car and I asked them who "Club Car Sal" was. They had no idea and were trying to figure it out for themselves. Will Sal's identity ever be revealed? The Monsoon plays Sunday against Molinari's and then Tuesday at 8pm against Meola's at Windle field in Millbury. I mention this because no team that has played 2 games in 1 week has won both games except Club Car back in week 1. Sal might want to keep that in mind when making the spreads this week. Not to mention Millbury has 21 guys on their roster and 9 are injured/unable to play. The Monsoon has been running on fumes for weeks and this may be the week the gas runs out. OCTOBER 11th 2005: Lights Sports Pub was down 7-2 early in the 1st half against Emerald Isle. Lights scored a TD and then decided to go for two points. You're up 8-7. Why are you going for 2? Anyway they miss it. Midway thru the 2nd half Lights scores another TD. They kick the extra point and are now winning 15-7. Instead of being up 2 scores they're only up 1 because they didn't kick the extra point. Lucky for them this gaff didn't cost them the game and they came away with their 1st win. OCTOBER 4th 2005: I had to monitor the East Side/Meola's game this week. Before the game the referee came up to me and asked me what the rule is about head-wear. I told him players are allowed sweatbands but nothing else. Meola's was very displeased with me saying that and starting telling me it's a ridiculous rule and I wasn't very bright if I couldn't see that for myself. First let me start by saying, I'm NOT very bright. Ask anyone on my team and they'll back me up on that statement. Second, I DO NOT run the league nor do I make the rules. I was asked what the rule was by the referee and I told him. I did not seek out the referee to point it out and bust Meola's balls. Third, some rules are more important to follow than others and I don't think this rule is as important as most, but that being said, if you're going to push the envelope so to speak, at least try not to make it so obvious that you're doing it. Don't have some guys in bright yellow scull caps, others with rainbow bandanas, etc. I doubt this would have been an issue if everyone had similar head-wear. Last, just because you have been doing something that is against the rules for a few years and no one said anything to you about it doesn't mean that when a referee finally does say something to you that the rule should be ignored because it was never mentioned to you before. For those of you that think that way, the next time you get on the Mass Pike and get pulled over for doing 80 mph, start yelling at the cop about how you have been speeding on the Pike for the past 5 years and he's never pulled you over before and that you shouldn't get a ticket because the speed limit is ridiculous. I'll give you a dime at the next game so you can let me know how that works out for you. SEPTEMBER 25th 2005: Well at the request of some players from the Club Car team I am updating this section of the web page. And as luck would have it, I plan to discuss Club Car. With under 2 minutes to play in the half against Millbury they were down 14-0. They were due to get the ball back at the start of the 2nd half. If they could get a score here they'd be in great shape. One problem, they had the ball on their own 9 yard line with a 1st and 11. For those of you who don't know where I'm going with this, scroll down to November 7th 2004 and then come back to finish reading this. Continuing, Club Car decided to go for the score. I'm not sure that was the right move but who knows maybe a safe pass play can turn into some big yards and give them some decent field position to work with. Their 1st play resulted in a 1 yard gain. My guys wanted to call timeout but I told them to wait and see if Club Car would call one 1st. And they did. Why, I'm not sure. It's 2nd and 10 from the Club Car 10. Another pass for a gain of about 2 and again another timeout by them. It's now 3rd and 8 and my defense is salivating cuz they realize a stop here and were get the ball back with great field position and ALL THREE timeouts. At this point I think Club Car might have realized their mistake but figured it was too late to turn back so they needed to get the 1st down. What other choice did they have right. We stopped Club Car on 3rd down and had a pretty decent punt return to their 30 yard line with 40 seconds left. Two plays later we scored. Hindsight is 20/20 but why not 'quick kick' it on 3rd down? You avoid the return and with a lucky roll maybe put us in bad field position and maybe we make a mistake in our end of the field. But like I said, it's easy to say now that the game is 10 hours old. SEPTEMBER 14th 2005: There has been some complaints about a lack of schedule, too many night games, and of course the refs. Instead of complaints, we need solutions to the problems and we need more people to get involved in helping to improve the league. Right now there is a handful of guys trying to do that but in a league with 200+ members it would be nice to have a little more participation. DECEMBER 19th 2004: In my opinion the teams should form a committee as Jake mentioned but they should encourage Jake to come back for a 35th season. The committee should take on a more involved role to included requesting fields, referee recruitment/scheduling, and overall league issues. This could all be done with the guidance of Jake and Ted. Those of you who don't think Jake should be involved probably thought Jerry Jones would do a better job running the Dallas Cowboys than Jimmy Johnson. Or that the Los Angeles Lakers would be better off keeping Kobe Bryant and getting rid of Shaquille O'Neal and Phil Jackson. Those that think the Central Mass Flag League will be better off without Jake Powers are in for a reality check and I guarantee will still be the ones complaining about the rules and the way the league is run. My last comment about this situation is this, Jake went easy on a lot of teams and they took advantage of it. If I end up on a committee with any say on how the league should be run, I guarantee the days of late team payments, lifetime player suspensions being lifted, and teams with general disregard for league rules they don't agree with, will be over! NOVEMBER 30th 2004: I recommend going to this weeks Community League Championship. I'm sure some of you think it's not worth it since that's the "lower" division. But teams who win the Community League championship can quickly become a thorn in the side of City league teams. Both Millbury and the Worcester Police Dept. won Community League titles before successfully jumping up to the next level. With a win Sunday, Dukes might follow in their footsteps. This past week there was a survey on the web asking who would win the Community League. Dukes originally had a 16 to 3 lead over East Side. I know East Side has a lot of pride but they should have just used that as motivation. Instead they overloaded the survey with votes for themselves so the next day they had a 63 to 16 vote lead. By doing that they disrespected Dukes and fired them up for the semi-final playoff game. I thought that was a big mistake on their part until Dukes decided to post a comment on the web about how they were going to "smoke East Side". Luckily for Dukes, motivation can only carry a team so far and they managed to back up their statement and defeat the Warriors. And last, lets talk about "Integrity". Both Fisher and the Monsoon understand the significance of that word in relationship to our game on Sunday since it was the main topic of one of the arguments between the two teams. All I will say is the championship game had more than a few heated discussions transpire between both teams. This really isn't a big deal. In the course of a game between teams with a lot of pride stuff is said that shouldn't be taken seriously. That being said, after one play, I had someone threaten to kill me after the game. Does anyone know if that falls under the "integrity" umbrella? Hey Jimmy Valis, give me a call. I'm suddenly in the market for some life insurance. NOVEMBER 22nd 2004: Molinari's had a QB earlier in the year who could throw the ball as good as anyone in the league but he had surgery on his arm and didn't play the last half of the year. Originally I thought that would make Molinari's nothing more than a better than average community league team. Instead it made them one of the best teams in the league because their replacement quarterback might be the best play caller in the league. It'll be interesting to see who they make the starting QB next year. The last regular season game of the year was played between Lights Sports Pub and Grafton. A photographer from the Telegram and Gazette happened to swing by and take a few pictures because he said "it was a slow night in the City" and he saw the lights on at East park and decided to swing by and see what was going on. Nothing against Grafton or Lights Sports Pub, but this league could use all the good publicity it can get and quite frankly that wouldn't have been my first choice of games I would have recommended him come to watch. I guess it could have been worse though. NOVEMBER 15th 2004: This week's game between Dukes and the Undertakers ended early because of a questionable incident on the field. A receiver for the Undertakers came across the middle of the field and was hit between the numbers on his shirt and knocked to the ground. This led to a fight and both players were ejected. The Undertakers thought this was a "cheap shot" but it wasn't. That doesn't mean the hit was legal either. The player who made the hit thought he was making a legal hit and probably 90% of the people in the league would agree because he hit him in the numbers on the front of his shirt. But there are rules as to the type of hit you can make in that situation and I'm not so sure they were followed. Both players were thrown out for fighting after the incident but that was not satisfactory for some of the Undertakers. They took their anger out on the referees. After they refused to stop badgering the referees the refs called the game. They then started screaming that the league and the refs are against them and don't want them to win. Let's stop right here for a second. There are 11 teams in this league and I've heard all (including Millbury) except one (Emerald) at one point or another make the claim that the league and/or the refs are against them winning. Listen up, if the league was against you winning then you wouldn't be in the league to begin with. Playing in this league in not a Constitutional right. And as far as the refs go, they don't give a rats ass who wins. They just want to collect a paycheck and do their best to avoid listening to the rest of us bitch at them. They are human though and the more you complain to them the less calls you will get. You don't have to be a brain surgeon to figure that one out. Now after the game was called, the Undertakers had the balls to call Millbury out in front of everyone at the field, as cheaters in this league. I asked them to name ONE thing we've ever done that was cheating. Their response was that we just played a game with a player who wasn't on our roster at the beginning of the year. The player he pointed out has been with us since day one just like everyone on our team. (I'll admit though, the player he called out has played like crap the last two weeks so I can see how it might be easy to mistake him for someone else but I digress). If you're going to call ME a cheater and say my team breaks rules then you better have some hard evidence to back it up. For example:
NOVEMBER 14th 2004: Give credit to Lights Sports Pub. They were outplayed by Commonwealth on a field which was covered by snow and in poor condition. Yet, they kept themselves in the game by playing smart. They kicked field goals and punted when most teams would go for it and they used the clock wisely down the stretch. By doing this they put themselves in a position to tie the game at the end of regulation and they they were successful. They then took a gamble in overtime for the win and got it. NOVEMBER 7th 2004: Where do I start, the Undertakers seem like the logical choice. They lost this week by 4 points because after one of their players scored a TD he did an end zone dance. Like it or not, by rule this disallows the touchdown as everyone in the league should know, ESPECIALLY the Undertakers since this is at least the third time they have been involved in a game where this has happened. Needless to say after the TD was called back they failed to score. Too bad this website doesn't have a "Dummies of the Week" link. I'll move on to Dukes now. Has anyone ever heard the saying, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it"? Obviously Dukes hasn't. Earlier in the year against Fisher they had the ball in a zero/zero tie with under a 2 minutes to go in the half and were due to receive the ball to start the 2nd half. Instead of playing conservative and eating the clock they gambled on risky plays and Fisher got the ball back and scored with no time left in the half. So yesterday against Molinari's they are down 14 - 6 with a minute to go in the 1st half and will be getting the ball to start the 2nd half. Sound familiar? They're deep in their own territory and instead of killing the clock they decide to run a reverse pass out of their own end zone. Can any of you Einstein's reading this figure out how well that worked out for them? You guessed it. Safety. Two points for Molinari's and Dukes never recovered. It was lights out from there. Last, Commonwealth. In the 1st few weeks of the season their offense, which is subpar at best, was running some trick plays where they would run a double reverse flea flicker pass. It seemed to be somewhat effective since it isn't something defenses see every day. Well guess what, it's week NINE guys. Everyone has seen that play. Yesterday they ran it a couple times against Emerald Isle. By wasting time with all the trickery, Commonwealth had little time to throw the ball and Emerald Isle was able to get in the backfield and create havoc. Emerald Isle which had given up more points than any other team in the league before the game, looked like the number one defense in the league yesterday. And by the way, based on points given up, who do you think is now the the worst defense in the league? Yup, Commonwealth. One other thing about Commonwealth. Most of the guys on their team are stand up guys but yesterday they had one guy who blew a fuse. About halfway through the game, he threatened to punch the first guy from Emerald Isle he lined up against. Anyone who knows Emerald Isle can tell you it's highly unlikely they did something to warrant a response like that. Well anyway, this guy was tossed out of the game by the refs and then threatened the ref afterwards for tossing him. After being escorted off the field by teammates he came upon the whole Molinari Insurance team in the end zone and tried to provoke them into a fight. Molinari's is one of the last teams you want to mess with in this league and I'm surprised none of them knocked him out. Here's my advice to Commonwealth, you're 0 - 8, I don't care how good a player is, guys with bad attitudes need to go. They're nothing but a distraction. It's not like they're helping you win games. If they were, then MAYBE an argument could be made to keep them around. But they're not, so it's time to clean house. |
